The government recently reported that by 2020 4% of the electricity in the UK would be provided by solar power. The UK has now 650,000 solar energy installations. Based on the falling prices of solar panels, the government had actually increased their forecast to 4%, which may sound impressive but Germany already produce 4.5% of their electricity through solar. However, is it now time to think about solar for your home or business?
Solar energy installations can be positioned anywhere between South West facing and South East facing roof, although ideally your roof will be South facing. The angle in which solar panels should be pitched is anything between 25-40 degrees. The closer your solar panels are at a 30 degree angle, the better.
We use a tool called Solmetic SunEye that measures the amount of sunlight you can expect to have over the year. This information is then analysed by our software package to produce an MCS approved shading analysis chart. We then use an MCS irradiance chart that distinguishes the amount of daylight in certain parts of the country.
We can then calculate very accurately the financial projections you are likely to receive over the year taking into account the orientation of the solars panels, the angle, any shading and also where you are in the country.
People who invest in solar energy do so for many different reasons. For some people, investing in solar power is a way in which to reduce their energy bills, using the energy generated by the solar panels rather than the electricity supplied by your energy provider. Depending on the size of your system, your energy supplier will pay you for every unit of electricity you generate. The solar PV tariffs are revised every 3 months according to deployment rates. You can also receive currently 4.77 p/kWh for every unit of electricity you don't use and export back to the grid. On average 50% of the energy generated by solar panels is exported back to the grid.
