Solar energy powering award winning cottage farm

Thursday 16 October 2014

Linda Jee runs an award winning ecological B&B in Cropston Leicestershire. Having converted the original farm buildings and cottage in an environmental way the B&B incorporates an ethos of sustainable development and has become a haven for visitors looking for luxury with an emphasis on greener living. It is no wonder that Horseshoe Cottage Farm has won the prestigious Green Tourism Business Scheme Gold Award.

Linda says ‘we believe in environmental sustainability and have tried to place it at the heart of what we do. Some visitors choose to stay with us specifically for our sustainable ideals and this certainly gives us a commercial edge’.

Early in 2011 Linda contacted Run by the Sun to look at installing PV, having had a personal recommendation from a friend. Linda explains ‘Simon came and gave us all the information we needed and discussed the options of different panels, allowing us to choose the highest generating capacity for the roof area available. We had the PV panels installed in May, which was quick with no intrusion, important for the business’.

We estimated that the system would produce3255 kWh per year, providing a payback in just ……8.years. The annual return on investment is ……12.5.% and on top of that the system will save ……1850..kg of CO2 annually.

Linda has installed a Sunnybeam monitor to inform her of how much electricity is being generated at any one time. She also uses an Owl monitor to show her how much electricity she is using. By utilising both monitors Linda maximises the benefit of the PV panels and achieves substantial financial savings.
