Free hot water from your PV solar system with Solar iBoost

Monday 04 April 2016

At Run By The Sun, we’re always looking at ways to maximise the return on your investment in solar technology. As payments from the government’s FIT scheme continue to be reduced, in many respects it’s also advantageous for homeowners with solar panels to consume the electricity they generate.

An energy storage battery is just one product that is helping people with PV solar systems to become more energy independent. Solar panels naturally generate more electricity during the day, however this is when people are at work and homes are typically unoccupied. Any excess solar energy generated would typically be exported back to the grid, however an energy storage battery stores this excess energy and then releases it during peak times (in the morning and evening) when you need it most.

Introducing the Solar iBoost

The Solar iBoost from Marlec is another product that assists in helping homeowners with a PV solar array to take advantage of excess energy. If your home has hot water storage with an immersion heater, the device uses solar energy from your system to heat up hot water for free.

How does the Solar iBoost work?

Solar iBoost is a wireless product, transmitting export energy information and intelligently controlling and adjusting the flow of energy to the immersion heater so that only excess energy is ever used. Connected in between the isolation switch and your hot water tank, the Solar iBoost is able to heat water in a 100L tank from from 20˚C to 60˚C in two and half hours based on a PV array generating 50% surplus energy.  It comes with a 2 year warranty and the battery within the wireless sender has a life expectancy of 12-18 months.  We recommend that you replace the battery yearly to ensure that the wireless sender is performing well.

The Solar iBoost has a built in display enabling you to view information on daily and monthly savings as well as your total savings from when the iBoost was first installed.

The benefits of the Solar iBoost include,

  • Savings on your energy bills by cutting the cost of water heating
  • Reduce the use of your boiler
  • Maximise the use of free surplus solar energy

Does the Solar iBoost affect my Feed In Tariff payments?

In short, not at all. When the Feed In Tariff scheme was first introduced, it was decided that it was too costly to fit smart meters in order to measure specifically how much energy you were exporting back to the grid.  This is still very much the case now.

Regardless of the energy consumption from one household to the next – you might have single occupied home that exports 70% of the energy generated back to grid or a large family who export 30% back to the grid – everyone with PV solar gets paid a fixed export rate based on 50% of energy being consumed and 50% being exported back to the grid.

Like energy storage systems, the Solar iBoost enables you to take advantage of the surplus energy generated, reduce your energy bills and still receive the financial benefits of the FIT scheme.

How much will I save on my energy bills?

It’s strongly estimated that with Solar iBoost you could save around 0.50p per day on your energy bills, roughly £160 a year. This would mean the Solar iBoost and the iBoost Buddy which is an optional in-home display monitor is easily paid back within 2 years. This is obviously dependent on how much energy you actually consume, however we have an iBoost fitted and it means that typically between March and October our hot water is heated by the solar energy we produce.

Run By The Sun can seamlessly install and integrate the Solar iBoost with your PV solar system. We require a pre-installation visit just to make that there is a separate circuit from the tank available. For more information or to arrange a visit, please contact us on 0116 270 1926.
