Using a MCS approved solar panel installer: results of our recent annual audit

Friday 11 March 2016

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is a nationally recognised quality assurance body for solar panel installers. By using an MCS approved installer, customers are eligible to receive payments from the government's Feed In Tariff (FIT) scheme as well as the renewable heat incentive.

Why it's important to use a MCS approved installer

Besides it being fundamental if you wish to receive FIT payments, there are several other benefits to using a MCS approved solar energy installer:

  • Being that solar panels are a financial investment, customers can be reassured that a MCS certified installer will install a PV solar system with highest quality products and to the best industry standards.
  • Naturally there are ethics and codes of conduct which any business professional should abide by, however this isn’t always the case. The MCS works in partnership with the Renewable Energy Consumer Code (RECC) and The Home Insulation & Energy Systems Contractors Scheme (HIES) which ensures that MCS Installation Companies are working to a Trading Standards Institute (TSI) approved code of practice.  This includes a non-pressured sales approach where details of a PV solar installation is explained both verbally as well as in writing.
  • As mentioned in our previous post on meeting carbon emissions and sustainability requirements for new build homes, MCS approved solar technologies can be used to meet these targets.

Our annual MCS audit

Yesterday we received the results of our annual audit to ensure that we still operate to the same exacting standards of the scheme.

This involves an MCS auditor spending 3 hours going through all aspects of our company control documents including checking over 150 different points as well as quotes, equipment registers, design software, risk assessments and structural calculations. Part of the process also involves going to the site of a completed solar installation and comparing the installation to the paperwork which accompanies it.

Following three weeks of thorough auditing and hard work, our MCS1239 accreditation for the first time received full marks – 100%!

These codes of practice are all about confidence and helping prospective clients to make an informed decision, safe in the knowledge that as consumers they are protected.  We’re delighted that customers can commission and refer Run By The Sun confidently.
